There really is no place like California. With rugged coastlines, bustling cities, tranquil mountains, and relaxing beaches it’s no wonder that California is one of the world's top travel destinations. Where else in the world could you go water surfing and snow skiing in the same day? Or how about visit the mountains and the city within an hour’s drive?
What many people don't realize is that Southern and Northern California are really two very different tourist destinations. California has a reputation for endless summers. While this may be somewhat true for Southern California, Northern California typically has a climate of 60 degrees year round. Northern California is very lush and has some of the most beautiful coast lines in the world; however beach goers may want to stick to Southern California beaches as the Northern California beaches are very cold.
Let’s start with the top Northern California destinations and work our way down the coast. One of the best Northern California destinations is of course San Francisco. Fisherman’s Warf, Union Square, and China Town are all places to see while in San Francisco. Park at Pier 39 and walk the boardwalk for fun shopping and beautiful views. While in Northern California you should check out Sacramento, the state’s capital, and Yosemite, one of the most beautiful national parks in the world.
Southern California is home to some of the most famous cities in the world including Hollywood, Los Angeles, Venice, Santa, Monica and Malibu. If you are looking for a bustling city experience you should stay in Hollywood for the true Southern California experience. Hollywood offers the El Capitan theatre where you may get lucky enough to witness a movie premiere, the Kodak theatre where the academy awards are held, and the Walk of Fame where the A list celebrities get their stars.
If you are looking for more of a beach vacation, Southern California is your destination. For a more bohemian experience you can check out Venice. Venice has tons of street performers and local artists as well and vocal activists which give the area a true bohemian flair. If you are looking for great shopping Santa Monica may be your place. Third street promenade is one of the world’s most premiere shopping destinations. For a more luxurious beach vacation Santa Barbara and Malibu offer amazing beaches along with five star hotels and dining.
